If your lawn has gone patchy or your planting beds look tired, it is tempting to reach for a product and hope for the best. A better first step is to find out what your soil actually needs. At Genesis Sprinklers and Water Management, LLC, our soil care starts with a soil test and uses natural soil amendments such as compost. Genesis does not apply fertilizer, herbicides or pesticides. In this article, we go over what you should know about soil testing and natural soil amendments.
- Start With a Soil Test – A soil test shows what is really going on under your lawn and beds, including the pH and how much organic matter the soil holds. UF/IFAS recommends testing soil before adding anything to it, so that what goes into the ground is based on what the soil needs, not on a guess.
- What Natural Amendments Are – Natural soil amendments are materials such as compost and other organic matter. They are worked into planting beds or spread in a thin layer over a lawn, and they improve the soil itself rather than adding a product on top of it.
- Why Sandy Soil Benefits – Much of the soil in Manatee and Sarasota Counties is sandy and drains quickly. UF/IFAS notes that organic matter such as compost helps sandy soils hold water and nutrients, which can mean healthier plants and less water running straight past the roots.
- Water to Match – Soil that holds water better needs a different watering schedule. As an irrigation company, we set your sprinkler system zone by zone to how your soil takes in and holds water, so you water what your plants need and no more.
